One of the best coaches I ever had suggested this to me: Create an image that is bigger than you currently are and then fill those shoes. I had heard this message in probably a million different ways in my life but for some reason, when worded like that, it hit me like a ton of bricks.
I immediately imagined the shoes I wanted to fill and then asked myself this simple question: Who do I need to grow into to make it happen?
Notice I did not ask what do I need to do or what do I need to get to make it happen - I just needed to know who I needed to BE. Once I was clear on that, filling the shoes was a breeze. Now I just imagine bigger shoes!
The real story of our lives is not going to come down to what we did or what we acquired but rather who we became. Who are you to the people in your life? Who are you to your children, your partner, your clients? Do you go to bed each night knowing that you showed up big in your life and that you were the most extraordinary version of yourself?
Most people live their lives content with mediocrity. They make excuses for not doing more or being more and then wonder why the life they dream about and the relationships they crave in their secret moments haven't come to pass.
The reason is an unwillingness to imagine your life extraordinary or a fear of falling short if you dream too big.
One of the gifts of life is that you have been given free will and the power to choose how you want to be in this world. If you have an unwillingness to be more, then you have to accept less. If you dare to think BIG and employ a whatever it takes attitude to achieve it, you will surpass even your wildest of dreams.
If you have a fear of failing or falling short of your goal, recognize that your fears are not real - they are thoughts designed to protect you from imagined dangers.
But, if you must have a fear, fear being too small. Fear wasting your life and fear what will happen if the rest of the world doesn't get to benefit from the beauty inside of you.
If you want to play a bigger game, are tired of missing out on the sweet nectar of life but can't stop thinking about yourself and how this is impacting you, start focusing on others for a while. You were not put on this earth to satisfy yourself and live separate from the life around you. You were put here to share your gifts with everyone you meet. Don't rob us of that gift.
Show us who you are and give the very best of yourself to everything you do every day and pretty soon you'll discover the unlimited potential that lies within.
What shoes are you ready to fill?
