Are you experiencing stress in the workplace or at home? If you feel like you're “on edge," here are a five tips for taming your tension:
1. Take a break.
Stand up and walk out the door. If you're stressed out, getting away for a short time will make a huge difference.
Putting distance between you and your “stressor" will help calm you down, so that you're less frazzled. Take a short walk, visit a quiet spot in your office building, or a nearby coffee shop. Take time out for yourself. A change of atmosphere will clear and refresh your mind.
2. Talk it over.
It's tempting to lash out at a co-worker, especially if they're out of line. However, it's better to simmer down, and address the situation in a cool, calm and collected manner.
If you need help processing your anger, talk to a close friend or trustworthy co-worker. Talk about your anxious feelings, and get things “off your chest."
Talking to a confidant for at least 20 minutes will help to neutralize the “fight or flight response." It also prevents you from saying things that you might regret later.
3. Stretch.
Stretching does wonders for your state-of-mind! It doesn't have to be rigorous. Take a second to stretch your legs underneath your desk. Flex your toes, and then point your foot. Make a little circle, rolling your foot from the ankle. Do it clockwise, and then counterclockwise. Now clench your fist, and then release. Stretch your fingers out, by extending them wide. Wiggle your fingers, as if you're typing on air.
Aaah, don't you feel better now?
4. Enjoy a healthy snack!
How about a granny smith apple, a bunch of grapes, or a cup of green tea? This will calm you and to help you sustain your energy for the rest of the day. Of course, this doesn't mean munching on doughnuts, cookies or Snickers. If you crave a sweet treat, that's fine, but remember to use moderation. Don't overdo it!
5. Laugh!
Laughter relaxes tense muscles, brings in more oxygen into our system, and lowers blood pressure. Next time you feel angry or upset, call a friend with a good sense of humor. Find something to laugh about. Come up with funny jokes, but not offensive ones.
This will lift your spirits and put you in a playful mood. Look for humor in everyday situations. When you “lighten up" and don't take yourself too seriously, life becomes more carefree.
Whatever you do today, remember to take some time out for yourself... and relax!
