If you have ever read the Peanuts cartoons by Charles M. Schulz, you may remember his famous line, “There is no greater burden than having a great potential.”
Most of us feel like we would gladly have the problem of having a great potential instead of facing the situation we are in. Many of us spend years trying to decide exactly what it is we are supposed to be doing.
We’re not always sure where our talents lie. We don’t even know if we have a potential.
This kind of indecision is common when we are young and just starting out on our lives. But this confusion hits older people too – people who have been downsized, or people who are bored and frustrated in their work, yet they don’t know what they should be doing instead.
Did we take a wrong turn somewhere? Did we not try hard enough? Have we been working really really hard at the wrong thing?
All of us get filled with self doubts at times, especially when life doesn’t seem to co-opererate with our dreams.
That is why it is worth making the effort as Matthew Roberts advises in the following article to do a periodic review of our talents. Not just our bigger and most obvious talents, but all the little talents we have as well.
In this article, Matthew Roberts reminds us that sometimes one of our small, overlooked talents might end up being the key to success.

Harnessing The Power Of Your Potential
By Matthew Roberts
Everyone was born with a tremendous amount of potential.
You start learning about it from the arms of your parents. Then education and the people you interact with improved it until you can recognize it yourself. Admittedly, some are more gorgeous than you are; some were given higher IQs and some have more talent than you have. But that’s the beauty of it – you are a unique individual and whatever you have, can be molded the way you like it.
Essentially, your potential is something you know you can do. Find out what it is and you’re halfway to getting empowered with it. It could be anything – a good academic record, a flair for words, an inclination in the arts or sports, beauty, talent, etc. If you know what you have, then you can use it.
List down your talents however small: baking goodies, a neat handwriting, making caricatures, craft-making, etc. You’ll never guess how some successful people started out by using the little that they know and parlayed into something big!
Now that you know what talents you have, think outside the box and find ways to use it. Remember not to start comparing what you can do with what others can. You are unique and you must mind your own backyard.
The worst that you can do is to scare yourself so much that you just hide it out for fear of failing. Start out small and get more creative as the skill gets honed through time.
For example, you discovered that you like making beaded bracelets and friends started admiring what you make. Why don’t you ask around for the possibility of you making some for them at minimal price? Soon you’ll find that word of mouth advertising will get you more and more orders. Wouldn’t it be great to get paid for doing something that you like?
You can let your new-found gift be just a hobby where you can earn a few bucks or go full time in doing it. You can decide how much or how little you want to spend time on it.
You can even take steps to improve it if you want – take lessons, practice more, read on new designs or patterns, attend seminars, innovations, etc. Whatever you feel is comfortable for you would be the best. The important thing is to use the inborn talent you were blessed with..
When you start harnessing the power of your potential, the possibilities will be endless.
