In the following article about how to improve your memory skills, the author Kyle Richey offers three helpful suggestions you can use if you want to improve your ability to remember.
One point that the author makes in his article is that you will remember much better if you actually take the time to understand what you are trying to learn. That is why he suggests that when you are reading, you should take the time to slowly read and mentally digest the material.
Why is this important? It's much easier to remember something that you actually understand. Otherwise, trying to remember a lot of seemingly unrelated facts will become a difficult chore.
Here's another way you can be sure you understand something which is a bit difficult for you. After you have studied the material a bit, find yourself a learning buddy, and see if you can explain to them what you have been studying.
This little exercise will show you not only the essential points that you have successfully understood, but you will also be able to identify which areas you need to go back and revisit because you don't fully understand them yet.

Improving your memory is a lot like getting in shape - both require a type of exercise. If you don't use your memory, it'll only atrophy and deteriorate over a period of time, just like a muscle.

Even if you are paying close attention while listening, you still aren't as engaged as you would be if you were writing something down.
Take time when you read. Don't rush it just to finish reading. You need the time to absorb the information.
Improving your memory skills means improving your reading comprehension. The more practice you get the faster you will eventually be able to read and comprehend, but start out slow. Just reading helps engage your mind similarly to writing, and that's going to help you remember things in the long run.
Reflecting on what you have learned is another thing that can help with improving your memory skills. Whether it is something sentimental or educational it will give the brain a work out on the events of the day. Long term memory commitment can be done just by considering what you learned.
