If you’re serious about improving your memory, you’ve probably already checked out a few techniques offered in various books and websites that show you new techniques to form strong memories in your mind. In fact, you have probably already tried a few of these techniques on your own to see if your memory really can be improved.
What have been your results? Did your memory improve or not? If you’re like many people, you may have found that these techniques offer some help for a poor memory or a failing memory, but that these memory improving techniques do not offer the whole solution.
Why do these memory techniques not always work for people?
One reason is that the human brain is incredibly complex. In fact, the human brain has been called the most complex object in the known universe! It can out-compute any current computer in existence in terms of the complexity and volume of its calculations, but amazingly, it’s a fairly small and very delicate part of your body.
For all the computing power your brain can do, it’s basically a type of organic computer made mostly out of fat. It’s very dependent on a steady supply of oxygen and glucose and it’s easily damaged. Old age is not always kind to its various components.
If your brain happens to have an owner who was never very careful about feeding it properly and giving it the rest it needs, the wear and tear on your brain can end up making it malfunction. As people age, accessing short term memories that were recently formed becomes more difficult. With advancing age, most people become more and more forgetful.
Around age 50 is when many people start to panic, realizing that their mind is no longer what it used to be.
Still, the odds are on your side. You can still learn how to look after your brain properly, and you should be able to get many more years of use out of this amazing part of you!
The following article by J Wall will give you some ideas of various things you can do to help boost your memory and brain power.

Memory Enhancement Techniques That Can Safely Increase Your Brain Power
By J Wall
We could all use some safe and effective memory enhancement techniques. With all the demands of work, family and life, our minds are increasingly put to the test. Having the mental power to go the distance is vital. However, we often find ourselves tired and scatterbrained, lacking the energy to even remember what appointments we have on a given day, let alone be able to excel mentally.
Our mental energy can be affected by a variety of things: Stress, lack of sleep, poor nutrition, along with many other lifestyle factors can all impact the functioning of our brains. But memory enhancement doesn’t have to be difficult. It is possible to take some simple steps to revitalize your brain.
One of the most basic steps is ensuring you get enough sleep. While it is easier said than done in today’s busy world, sleep is critical. Sleep recharges not only your body, but your mind as well. Many studies have been done that show a direct link between rest and mental performance. It may take shifting priorities around to carve out that time, but the benefit is worth it.
Stress can have as big an impact as sleep, but is admittedly harder to address. We’ve all heard about how exercise can reduce stress, but many don’t realize it is an important memory enhancement technique, making it crucial that we fit it into our schedules.
Exercise affects your mental health by not only reducing stress and releasing endorphins (chemicals in the brain that reduce pain and improve mood), but by increasing blood flow thereby giving your cells the oxygen they need to function properly. Along with exercise, having a hobby or other activity that relaxes you will go a long way toward lowering your stress level.
Another critical factor in our mental health is that of nutrition. Just as our bodies need good food to work well, our capacity to think can be helped or hindered by our eating habits. Eating foods rich in B complex vitamins for example will help the body break down foods for maximum energy, produce red blood cells needed to transport oxygen and support nerve tissue health.
Foods high in Omega3 fatty acids will support brain function as well as help prevent clogged arteries which is good not only for your heart but for your blood flow to the brain. Through its impact on the whole body, eating well is a memory enhancement technique with benefits for every part of you.
Along the lines of getting proper nutrients through our food, another natural way for memory enhancement is through the use of a supplement that targets the health of your brain.
Many supplement manufacturers are producing products that specifically address the nutrients needed to power your brain.
In addition to the vitamins mentioned above, these supplements contain ingredients like: Huperzine A, which prevents the breakdown of neurotransmitters due to age related cognitive decline; Ginkgo Biloba, which improves blood flow to the body and brain; Ginseng, which may reduce stress effects on the body and boost the immune system and Vitamin E, which acts as an antioxidant to prevent cell damage and repair tissue.
Using supplements along with a proper diet, sleep and exercise will provide huge benefits to both body and mind.
While this list is by no means exhaustive, it should form the foundation of any approach toward improving your mental health. Applying these memory enhancement techniques may require a little time and effort, but the long term results will be worth it.
