Do you want to improve your learning ability? There are many instances where improved learning would be a good thing. Perhaps you are going to school and studying for a new career. Perhaps you already have a challenging job but you need to keep learning a lot of new material in order to hold on to your position.
How can we improve our learning ability?
Brain scientists have confirmed what parents, teachers, and even dog owners have always known – that repetition is one of the most effective ways to achieve more effective learning.
When we repeat an action over and over again, we strengthen the connections between the brain cells that fire whenever we do this activity. Then the next time we do the same activity again, that particular route for a signal to move in our brains will work better and be more efficient.
The same thing is true when we are learning new information. Repetition helps to strengthen the connections where the information is stored and with more repetition it becomes easier to recall.
Repetition isn’t the only way to learn information. In fact, repetition has some drawbacks as a method for learning and teaching. For one thing, it’s very time-consuming.
And it’s tedious. It doesn’t really involve the brain very actively in the learning process.
Just think back to your days in school when you may have had to memorize long lists of state capitals, or dates in history, and you will remember how boring repetition can be.
There are many learning techniques that will get your brain more actively involved in learning new information. One very effective way to improve your understanding and retention of new information is to teach the material to somebody else.
When you try to teach the material to someone else, several things happen. By repeating the information out loud, you signal your brain that this information is important. When your brain thinks that something is really important, it is much more likely to go into permanent storage.
When you teach someone else, you also develop a deeper understanding of your subject matter. You will be much clearer in knowing which parts of the subject you understand clearly, and which areas you still need to understand in more depth.
Although trying to teach someone else is a good technique for improving your memory and , this technique also has its drawbacks. For example, you can’t always finding someone willing to listen to you.
However, if you have a good imagination and you make the effort to visualize, you can actually visualize yourself giving a presentation to an audience and interacting with them. Some people are able to do this visualization so effectively that they get the same benefit from doing an imaginary exercise as they would from doing it in real life.
You don’t actually have to carry out the activity for your brain to benefit, as long as you can vividly imagine the experience of teaching the information.
In many cases, you can improve your own learning if you simply imagine yourself in great detail, carrying out the desired activity.
