Do you ever wish that you had a better vocabulary?  Do you envy those people who have a fluency with words?  Perhaps you want to learn some ways to improve your vocabulary, but you don't know the best way to go about it.

Having a good vocabulary is an asset to any profession.  A person who has a good vocabulary will sound more intelligent.  A good vocabulary can even result in a job promotion, because you will sound more confident and capable of work. Knowing more words means that you can understand more of what you read, and it also means you can explain more complicated ideas.

So, what can we do to improve our vocabulary?  The best way to improve vocabulary for you might not be the way that works best for somebody else.  We all have different learning styles.

We are all exposed to a lot of words every day.  Many of those words we encounter each day will be words we already know.  But each day it’s likely that we come across some new words, whether we are reading something or hearing a person speaking on television.

How do you react when you come across a new word, a word whose meaning you don’t yet know?  Do you simply skip over it?  Or do you make efforts to try to understand it?

If you are sitting at a computer it’s an easy thing to look up the meaning of new words in a dictionary.  If you ignore the new words that come your way, chances are that your vocabulary will never improve.

By being on the constant lookout for new words to add to your vocabulary, you will expand your ability to understand the world around you.  You will expand your ability to express yourself.
