What is intelligence really? Can we really improve our IQ?  Is IQ an accurate measure of intelligence?  In spite of studying the topic of intelligence for many years, scientists don’t really have a definition of intelligence that they can all agree on.

Scientists also don’t have a way to measure intelligence that they all agree on.

Why do scientists and researchers disagree about the definition of intelligence?

It’s very hard to define intelligence and to measure intelligence accurately because our minds are so complex.  Our brains have so many different talents, and these talents appear in a different mixture in different people at different times of their lives.

Some people are very talented at doing mathematics and logic, but they are not talented at learning history or at being creative.  Other people are talented at writing but not at chemistry.  So, how do we decide which of these people are the most intelligent?

If someone scores really highly in a very narrow area of learning, is that person more intelligent than someone else who has a wider range of learning, but who has a lower score in all areas?  Is someone who is really brilliant at mathematics smarter than a person who has a great deal of life wisdom and common sense?

Different societies tend to value different types of intelligence.

There are researchers into the field of intelligence who say that being a gifted athlete or dancer, or musician is also a form of intelligence.

Perhaps these examples will help you to understand why it is so hard for scientists to agree on what intelligence really is and how to measure intelligence.

Intelligence is often measured by a test called an Intelligence Quotient test (I.Q. test) , but not all scientists agree that the results of this test provide useful information.  In fact, some researchers say that the only thing an I.Q. test can predict is who will do well on an I.Q. test.

One thing that researchers who study the brain agree on is that the brain has a lot of potential that can be developed throughout our lives as long as the brain stays healthy.

Our brains are constantly changing, and we can learn new ways to improve our brains as long as we live.
