You have probably heard many times that fish is supposed to be a brain food, especially fish that comes from the deeper ocean. Now scientists know the reason why fish is good for your brain.
It’s because fish that come from the colder areas of the ocean contain a lot of important Omega 3 oils that are very good for your brain.
The reason why fish oil is beneficial to our brain is because our brain is largely made of fat. That may seem hard to believe. The brain is the most complex object in the known universe, with more computing power than the world’s most powerful computer, yet it’s largely made of fat!
To stay in tip top shape, our brain needs a constant supply of certain essential fatty acids. The word “essential” as it is used here means that the body is not able to manufacture these particular types of fatty acids. The only way your body can get these essential oils is from the food you eat.
You might think to yourself, “Well, I should be in good shape then. I get lots of fat in my food.” The problem is that most of the kinds of fats we get in our food these days are the wrong kind for our brain, as well as for many other parts of our body.
Not only is much of our dietary fat intake the kind that the brain can’t really use, a lot of our fat intake contributes to free radical damage to our delicate brain cells. Some of our dietary fat contributes to clogging up the tiny little blood vessels in our brains.
Nowadays, we eat too many saturated fats from animal sources. Most of us also eat too many Omega 6 fatty acids which are often found in our cooking oils and commercial salad oils.
Too much Omega 6 fatty acids intake can lead to inflammation of the cells in our brains. We don’t get nearly enough of the Omega 3 fatty acids because they are often stripped out during commercial food preparation.
Hundreds of years ago, it was easier for people to get the right sorts of essential fatty acids in their foods. People in the past ate much more nuts and seeds, whole grains, and if they lived near the ocean, they ate a lot more fish. All these foods are good sources of various types of essential fatty acids that the brain needs.
Today, if you want to get the right sort of fat in your diet, you have to do a lot of research to discover what the good fats are, and where to get them.
One excellent and tasty way to get more Omega 3 fatty acids is to eat more wild salmon from the Pacific Ocean.
Another good way to get some of the essential fatty acids provided by ocean fish is to take them in capsule form. Be sure to look for a brand that offers pharmaceutical grade fish oil that has been prepared very carefully and has had all potential contaminants removed.
