If you want to remember something better, a really good way to make the topic stand out in your memory is to try to teach it to someone else.  It doesn’t have to be a formal teaching session – you will remember and understand the topic better if you simply try to explain it to a friend.

Not only does talking about a topic help you remember it better later, it’s even useful to help you understand it better.  When you find a topic confusing or boring, why not try explaining it to somebody a few times?  It’s very likely that after you do this a few times, you will have a much better understanding of the topic.

When I was going to University, I took a geology class for one term.  I found most of geology to be very fascinating, except for the times when the professor talked to us about the Ice Age.

I found the Ice Age very boring.  I didn’t pay much attention to the topic at the time and I didn’t particularly try to understand it.  Perhaps the reason that I didn’t find the Ice Age interesting was because where I live, the glaciers had left behind one of the most boring landscapes on earth.  I think I was a little bit resentful of it for that reason.

Because I didn’t pay much attention to the material on the Ice Age, I ended up doing well on my geology tests except for the questions related to the Ice Age.

Later on when I started to work in a Museum however, part of my job was to teach students about the glaciers of the Ice Age.  By talking to other people about the Ice Age, and by helping to explain it to them, I finally started to understand it.  The act of teaching the topic helped me to understand it better.

Whenever you’re stuck in trying to understand a topic that confuses you or bores you, why not try teaching it to others?  Just try to informally discuss it a few times with other people to see if you can get them to understand it.  Chances are that after you try talking about a difficult topic a few times, you will understand it much better.  You might even come to think that it’s interesting.

Once you start to talk about the topic however, especially if you are trying to explain it to someone who doesn’t understand it, or who doesn’t agree with your point of view, you will start to have more opinions and more curiosity about it.  The more you talk about it in order to explain it clearly, the more you will increase your own understanding.

Another good way to improve your understanding of a topic is to write about it.  Writing can be an excellent way to increase your understanding and knowledge.

Writing about a topic gets your brain actively engaged.  It will give your brain a workout while you are looking for words, thoughts, supporting facts and conclusions.  The act of talking and writing gives your brain a signal that the topic is important.  Then the information is much more likely to go into long term storage in your brain.

By using writing and talking you will boost your memory and your understanding using very simple, low tech methods to get your brain activated.

When you give your brain a good workout, you will increase the connections between your brain cells and ultimately boost your brain power!
