If you suffer from loneliness and don’t know how to start to make new friends, you may secretly hope each day that something magical will happen and suddenly people will want to know you and be your friend.
I have known many lonely people who participated in exactly this form of magical thinking. Often, these were people who spent a lot of time alone at home, rarely going out, and yet they had the desperate hope that other people would mysteriously find them and become their friend.
Well, actually I have to make a confession here. I used to be one of those people myself. Even though it doesn’t make sense, I somehow didn’t realize that nobody was going to find me if I stayed home and didn’t talk to anybody.
I really believed that if I kept doing the same old thing the same old way, I would somehow start to get different results. Instead, I kept getting the same results.
Then I went on a lifelong search to learn the secrets of making new friendships. And eventually I figured it out.
I wrote a book about what I learned, which you may find very helpful to read. It’s called “Your Guide to Finding Friends, Making Friends, and Keeping Friends” and it’s available at http://www.lulu.com/real
Today I have lots of friends. It’s truly hard for me to remember how scared and lonely and anti-social I used to be.
I still have relatives and acquaintances today who haven’t figured it out, and they are not interested in learning what I have discovered. I have one relative who spends all his spare time in his house with the window shades pulled down, with an unlisted phone number, feeling desperately lonely, but he doesn’t realize that his reclusive life style is the reason he doesn’t have any friends.
I have another relative who fights with everybody and criticizes people sarcastically, and who can’t make the connection between her rude behavior and the fact that she has no friends.
If you’re not used to going out and interacting with people, you may find it hard to get started. You may have to start with something very easy and work your way up to more difficult social situations.
If you’ve never done it before, it will be scary the first time you do it. It may be scary the first dozen times you do it. It may even be scary the first few hundred times you do it.
But, eventually the scariness of this new behavior will become less. You will find it easier to be outgoing and friendly. Your self image will change. Your confidence will improve. And you will start to make new friends.
In the following article by author Stanley Rik you can learn more ideas to help you make new friends today.

How to Make New Friends Starting Today
By Stanley Rik
Everyone has the need for companionship and friendship is the core of all relationships. And yet with all of the billions of people in the world, millions are lonely.
People are seeking out how to make new friends on a regular basis. So how do you make new friends and where do you find them?
You start with you and you become your best friend. You treat yourself the way you want others to treat you. Be kind to yourself and start your day with positive words to yourself.
Here is an exercise that you should do everyday when you wake up. Get a hand mirror and look into your mirror and tell yourself, “I love you” (say your name) be sure to look into your eyes when you say these words. Continue to say positive affirmations of things you want to have be or do in your life as you look into your eyes while saying these things to yourself.
By doing this exercise you are speaking to the inner you and will soon be experiencing your self talk in your everyday life.
Next, you should take good care of your best friend (yourself) by exercise and good nutrition. I will not go into detail in these two areas as that is individual as to what your needs are, but if you feel good and look good you will be good to others as well.
Do what you love to do for you as far as activities. Don’t go to places where you think people are to meet potential friends. You might find people but not necessarily people that you have common interests with. So just be who you are and go to places that you have interests in and the people will be there for you to meet and you will make new friends.
You can start today wherever you are and in whatever you are doing just by saying hello and being friendly. As time goes on you can invite them to coffee or whatever you enjoy to just chat and get to know each other.
Make it a point to meet a few new friends as you will want to have more then one in case they have other plans or are busy. Besides, it will help you to grow as a person to have friends (plural) in your life. Try to have opportunities to be able to talk as well as doing non communicative activities as this will help you to grow and build lasting friendships for years to come.
Life is to be fortified by many friendships. To love, and be loved, is the greatest happiness of existence.
