Being an immigrant in a new country can be very difficult. You have a new country to deal with, new customs, new people. Your own family and friends may be far away, and difficult to reach. You may often feel lonely and wonder how you will ever make new friends.
On the other hand, when you are an immigrant in a new country, you may have many new opportunities that you never had before. Moving to a new country can be a very energizing experience, mixed with a few moments of fear and confusion.
If you are lucky, you will be able to make friends easily in your new environment. Not everyone finds it easy to make friends however.
A person who is outgoing will be able to make new friends everywhere. The fact that you are in a new location with new languages and customs does not have to hold you back if you are very extroverted and confident. If you are not so outgoing by nature, you may wish to try other techniques in order to meet new people and make new friends.
In the following article by Tony Chomba Mwangi Njanja you can get some good ideas on how to make friends when you have moved to a new country.
One good way is to try to discover if there are already people from your previous country who live nearby. Perhaps they have formed a church or a cultural center.
The ideas that Tony Chomba Mwangi Njanja presents in his article offer good information for making friends even if you haven’t moved to a new country. If you are someone who wants to make new friends, why not try some of these suggestions, no matter what your situation.
Even if you have lived in the same neighbourhood for the past twenty years, you can still use the practical ideas presented in this article as a way to expand your circle of friends.

A Little Known Way to Make New Friends as an Immigrant
By Tony Chomba Mwangi Njanja
I remember once meeting with a woman who had been an on and off immigrant for more than 10 years. By the age of 29, she had lived and studied in three countries. During the course of our brief interaction she shared with me a secret to quickly making friends in a new country. It has two parts:
1) Discover what Your Interests and Hobbies Are
This one is quite simple. Sit down and brain storm everything you are passionate about. This includes your pastimes, your hobbies or even things you may have seen on TV and always wanted to try. This can include things such as:
Sports: Rugby , Football etc
The Arts: Examples being musical theatre, dancing and acting.
Hobbies: Knitting, Skiing, Watching movies.
Business and finance.\Extreme sports and activities including bungee jumping and sky diving.
Religious activities including prayer, meditation and bible study.
It really doesn't matter, as long as you are passionate about it, write it down.
2) Search for Groups and Organizations that Engage in that Activity
The second part is to go out and search for groups, clubs, societies and associations that come together around any of the activities that you are passionate about. Some pointers about this:
Chose the group or organization with the most members to increase the likelihood of your making friends and the number of people you interact with.
When you are searching for an organization to join, begin with the places and people closest to you and work outwards. For example:
Search through your social circle to see if you know anyone who’s a member of a society engaged in your passion
Ask your room-mates and neighbours if they know of any club you may be interested in
Search around the notice boards and ask the administrative staff of your work place or University.
Visit recreation centres near you.
Ask for guidance and assistance from your local city council.
Perform searches online.
Searching Online
Should you decide to perform searches online, allow me to recommend a fantastic resource in Meetup (www.meetup.com ). They have groups and associations that cater to every passion and niche.
Best of luck and here's to an absolutely fulfilling social life.
