Do you consider yourself a creative person?
Your answer to this question might be “Yes, of course I’m creative”. But maybe your answer is “No, I really want to be more creative, but I don’t know where to start.”
If you’re wishing you could be more creative, you might be thinking there’s no hope for you. Maybe you’re just doomed to be uncreative for the rest of your life. But it doesn’t have to be this way. There’s a variety of techniques you can use to become more creative than you are right now.
If you think that you would like to become more creative than you currently are, there are steps you can take to move into a more creative way of expressing yourself.
One important first step to take if you want to become a more creative person is to examine your beliefs about your own creativity. Explore the reasons why you want to be more creative.
Is the reason you want to become more creative and improve your creative ability because you have lots of ideas and feelings inside you that you want to express?
Do you want to be more creative because you want a more exciting lifestyle?
Perhaps you think that creative people such as artists and musicians have very exciting lives filled with lots of drama while you feel as if you are stuck in a life that is too boring and routine and unexciting?
Once you have identified the real reasons behind why you want to be more creative, you should examine what you believe about your own creative abilities. Just because you think you’re not very creative, doesn’t really mean that it’s true.
Many people who are very creative have no faith or confidence in themselves. These people may have a tremendous amount of pent up creative talent but they don’t dare to express themselves creatively. Why not? In many cases, they suppress their urges to be creative because they are afraid that they won’t be good enough.
They may be perfectionists who won’t allow themselves to explore because they judge their own performance far too harshly.
These people run away from their inner creativity because they are afraid of failure. This kind of failure to explore one’s own creative talents can be a great tragedy, and will lead to a lifetime of frustration and regrets.
If you have a fear of being creative because you are afraid to fail, you need to give yourself permission to be creative. Give yourself permission to fail. Give yourself permission to play at being creative. And give yourself permission to work at being creative.
Take your creativity seriously, don’t sell yourself short.
